Geologic Framework Model

A geologic framework model is a three-dimensional mathematical representation of the sediment and rocks that comprise and surround an aquifer. It includes the land-surface elevation, depth and thickness of geologic layers, and location and angle of faults. By combining these elements in a mathematically rigorous way, geologic maps and sections can be visualized and tested. Alternative ideas of how the geologic structure is put together can be evaluated. The final product is fully 3-D, a grown-up version of the traditional fence diagram. Visualization software allows the user to rotate the geologic framework model, view it from many angles, and see underneath and inside. This process ensures that major geologic concepts are embodied accurately in the model, and provides the basis for creating credible groundwater flow models.
