Coring for Reconstructed Trends National Synthesis Study

Reservoir coring at four locations in the Santa Ana Basin study unit, as part of the Reconstructed Trends National Synthesis Study, was completed during the week of November 9-13, 1998. This study uses paleolimnological techniques to describe natural and anthropogenic changes in water quality in drainage basins of reservoirs. Trends found in the water quality reflect the relation between water quality and human activities, and changes in concentrations of environmental contaminants.  For local results, consult the C.A. Hemet Reservoir is located on the South Fork of the San Jacinto River. It is located at an elevation of about 1300 meters (4265 feet) above sea level. The drain basin is approximately 66 square miles. The entire drainage basin is located in the consolidated rock area. 1990 Population is estimated at 176.

Railroad Canyon Reservoir is located in the San Jacinto Basin. The nearest surface-water sampling site is San Jacinto River near Elsinore, 2.1 miles downstream of the outlet of the reservoir. Statistics given for Railroad Canyon Reservoir are derived for this sampling site basin. The drainage basin is approximately 737 square miles. New Urban Areas were determined by comparing SCAG 1993 land use with GIRAS land use. 4.44 percent of the basin is new urban; 9.92 percent of the pervious part of the basin is new urban. 1990 Population is estimated at 306,823.
