Suspended-sediment Transport in San Francisco Bay and Delta

Map of Sediment TransferThe United States Geological Survey in Sacramento, California, studies suspended-sediment transport in San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento/San Joaquin River Delta.  Suspended sediment is an important component of San Francisco Bay because it transports adsorbed toxic substances, provides habitat for benthic organisms, limits light availability and photosynthesis, can contribute to wetland restoration, and deposits in ports and waterways which require dredging. Specific studies of the project include sedimentation in the Delta, transport to and from a tidal wetland, exposure of Delta Smelt to pesticides, sediment transport in shallow Grizzly Bay, estuarine turbidity maximum processes, hydrology and water quality of the Napa salt ponds, and continuous monitoring and analysis of suspended-sediment concentrations in San Francisco Bay.
