Surface Water
Santa Ana River near Mentone (11051500), BFS
This site will serve as
a reference indicator where the Santa Ana River exits from the San Bernadino
Mountains. The drainage area is 210 mi2 at an elevation of 1950
feet above sea level. The USGS has operated a gage at this site since July
1896. Presently, in the reach that includes the gage, the channel is confined
to a width of about 200 ft. A smaller channel that is approximately 50
ft wide and constructed within the main river channel confines most sustained
flow. This smaller diked channel constricts low to high flows to the far
right side and has been maintained primarily to force flow into a diversion
pool at the gage shelter location. This site is downstream of the
newly-completed
Seven Oaks Dam. This
site is also a trend site sample 8 times
per year.
