Thirty-one shallow, domestic wells, most of which were privately owned, were sampled once between May and August of 1996 in the Sacramento subunit of the Sacramento Valley. These wells were randomly selected and were located in both agricultural and urban settings. The wells were sampled for major inorganic constituents and selected trace elements, pesticides, nutrients, stable isotopes, and volatile organic chemicals. The water was also sampled for tritium which allows for a determination of the relative age of the ground water.
