Gr Installation Instructions for Windows If Java 6 update 10 or later is not already installed, install it. This will create a jre6 directory within C:\Program Files\Java. Unzip gr_win_XXXXXXXX.zip (XXXXXXXX is the date) to the C:\ directory. This will create a C:\Program Files\USGS\Gr directory and put all the Gr files there. If you install Gr or Java to locations other than the default, you must edit the gr.bat file to use the correct paths. If you are upgrading an installation in a different directory, or you had to modify the gr.bat file for some other reason, make a copy of gr.bat before overwriting it with the new version. You will need to change the paths in the batch file from their default values. To run Gr, double click gr.bat or drag a file and drop it on gr.bat. Alternately, you can type "gr.bat filename", where filename is the name of a file Gr recognizes. If you don't give a filename, Gr will bring up an Open dialog box when it starts. Two windows will probably appear under Microsoft Windows. One is the Gr application itself, and the other is a console window which Java uses for writing output, including error messages. It is recommended that a shortcut be created on the desktop to C:\Program Files\USGS\Gr\gr.bat There is a .ico file in the Gr directory that can be used as an icon for the shortcut. Make sure the video driver is up to date, or the program may crash at startup. If the program crashes at startup, try opening a command window (Start->Run... , then type 'cmd') and running gr.bat from there so error messages can be read without the window disappearing.
