Ground Water Atlas of the United States -
Segment 1 California Nevada
Ground-Water Quality
The quality of water in the confined aquifers in the basin is generally suitable
for most uses. Dissolved-solids concentrations in the water are generally less
than 500 milligrams per liter and concentrations of chloride do not exceed
drinking-water standards recommended by the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency. Water imported from the Owens Valley and the Colorado River for recharge
has larger concentrations of dissolved solids, chloride, and sulfate than the
ground water, but the quality of the mixed native ground water and imported
water is within State and Federal standards for drinking water.
