Age of Ground Water

Naturally occurring radioactive isotopes of hydrogen (tritium) and carbon (carbon-14) were used to determine the age (time since recharge) of ground water. Tritium was used to identify recently recharged (post 1952) ground water and carbon-14 was used to estimate the age of older ground water.
